“Pate de verre is a form of kiln casting and literally translated means glass paste. Finely crushed glass is mixed with a binding material, and mixed with crushed fine glass. The paste is then applied to the inner surface of plaster mold in to layers. This is then fired for 12 hours to dry out then refired for further 24 hours in the kiln before leaving to cool, cold working then gilding! They are finished with a matt varnish.
This ancient technique can be traced back to 1500 BC and has had a revival in the last couple of hundred years.I
